Portsmouth Police have arrested a suspect following a fatal shooting that occurred late Saturday night in the Mayflower Road area.

According to authorities, officers responded to a call reporting a shooting in the 200 block of Mayflower Rd. on April 18, 2026, at approximately 10:44 p.m. When officers arrived, they located an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was later identified as 47-year-old Christopher M. Blair.
Blair was transported by medics to a local hospital for treatment, but despite lifesaving efforts, he succumbed to his injuries. Police confirmed the victim’s next of kin have been notified.
Investigators say the suspect, 54-year-old Bentley Tramaine Cherry, arrived at Blair’s residence, where an argument took place before Cherry allegedly shot Blair.
Cherry has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and shooting in committing or attempting a felony. Authorities stated he is currently being held without bond.
Police say the investigation remains active, and no additional details have been released at this time.
